WhatsApp might have found a way to save you from those unsafe group invitations

The popular messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is introducing a new feature to keep you safe from unwanted group chats.

On Tuesday, they announced that the “Context and Background” card will soon be available to everyone. It’s already being rolled out to some users. Here’s how it works: if someone you don’t know adds you to a group, an easy-to-read card pops up with all the important details. It shows who added you, when the group was created, and who is in charge. Then, you can decide whether to stay or leave.

WhatsApp also mentioned some handy safety tools. These include seeing who added you, how recently the group was made, and who created it. This update boosts safety by offering features like muting unknown callers, chat lock, privacy checkup, and controlling who can add you to groups.

This is great for when you meet new people or groups and haven’t saved their contact information yet. It helps you decide if the group is one you want to be in. The “Context and Background” card also works for messages from unknown people, giving you more context about them too.

WhatsApp’s security updates now include features like controlling who can add you to groups, silencing unknown callers, and locking private chats. These updates help users manage group invitations better. By giving users more control, WhatsApp is taking steps to protect its global user base from online scams and unwanted interactions in group messaging.
