Google has officially started rolling out the October Pixel Drop alongside the much-anticipated Android 15 update, bringing a host of new features to Pixel phones, tablets, and watches. This update introduces significant improvements, from enhanced security and camera functionalities to upgraded AI-powered features and health tools for the Pixel Watch. Android 15’s stable release is also included, making this update even more exciting. Let’s dive into all the new features rolling out with the October Pixel Drop.
Key Features in the October Pixel Drop
Theft Protection:
A major addition to the October Pixel Drop, this feature helps safeguard your device and data from theft. It uses Google’s AI and motion sensors to detect if your phone is snatched from your hand and will immediately lock the screen. Additionally, the phone will automatically lock if it goes offline. You can enable these features in the settings, and use the Remote Lock function to secure your device with a phone number or wipe all data remotely if stolen. This feature is available for Pixel 6 and newer models.
Pixel Weather App:
Initially launched on the Pixel 9 series, the revamped Pixel Weather app is now available for older Pixel devices, including the Pixel 6, 7, and 8 series. The updated app now includes a pollen tracker, available in select countries like France, Italy, the UK, and Germany, along with air quality index (AQI) and humidity level indicators.
Private Space:
Pixel 6 and newer devices running Android 15 now come with a Private Space feature, allowing users to hide sensitive apps and enhance security. This is especially useful for keeping confidential apps out of sight and protected.
Gemini with Pixel Screenshots:
Google’s Gemini AI has been further integrated into Pixel devices, offering new capabilities with Pixel Screenshots. Users can now search within their saved screenshots by simply long-pressing the power button and asking Gemini to find specific items, such as a pair of shoes or a brand saved in a screenshot. This feature makes finding important screenshots faster and easier.
Astrophotography & Camera Enhancements:
The Pixel 6 and newer models receive an upgrade to the Night Sight feature, allowing users to capture breathtaking images of the night sky. This feature is accessible via the Astro option in the Night Sight slider within the Pixel Camera app. Additionally, the Pixel 9 series sees improved underwater photography capabilities, providing more vivid and accurate colors while using waterproof cases. There’s also a new Night Sight mode for Instagram, letting users capture stunning low-light shots directly within the app.
Thermometer App Update:
The Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 9 series benefit from an updated Thermometer app. This feature uses the phone’s camera to display live temperature readings on various surfaces, which can be saved for future reference.
Widget Finder:
Pixel 6 and newer phones now include a widget finder, accessible by long pressing the home screen. This feature allows users to search for personalized widgets based on their preferences.
Adaptive Vibration:
Pixel phones’ microphones and sensors now adjust vibration intensity based on the surrounding environment. This feature ensures that users never miss important notifications in noisy areas or disturb others in quiet settings, like a library or office. Adaptive Vibration is available on Pixel 7 and newer models.
Call Screen Enhancements:
The Call Screen feature has been improved with a more natural-sounding voice and real-time text displaying what the other party is saying during calls. Additionally, users can respond to appointment confirmations or reservations without answering the call. This updated feature is currently available in the UK and Japan for Pixel 6 and newer models.
Audio Magic Eraser:
With this new tool, users can isolate and remove distracting background sounds from videos, adjust audio levels, and enhance voices for clearer audio.
Gemini Live:
Gemini Live, Google’s AI-powered conversational assistant, is now available to more users and supports additional languages, including German and Portuguese.
Pixel Tablet Updates
- Cast to Nearby Pixel Devices:
Soon, Pixel tablet users will be able to cast media between Pixel tablets and phones by simply bringing the devices close to each other. This feature will be supported on Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Fold, and newer devices, enabling seamless media sharing. - Notification Syncing:
With Android 15, notifications will now sync between your Pixel phone and tablet. If you’ve already viewed a notification on one device, it won’t appear on the other, reducing redundancy. - Home Controls Screensaver:
A new Home Controls Screensaver for Pixel tablets and phones will appear when the device is docked or charging. This screensaver integrates with the Google Home app, allowing users to control smart home devices directly from the lock screen. - Photo Sharing from Pixel Photo Frame:
Users can now share photos directly from the Pixel tablet’s digital photo frame feature. Additionally, new clock styles are available to customize the display.
Pixel Watch Enhancements
- Individual Contact Tile:
A new contact tile allows Pixel Watch users to display a favorite contact for quick actions like calling, messaging, or accessing contact details with a single tap. - Emoji Reactions in Gmail:
Pixel Watch now supports sending and viewing emoji reactions in Gmail, allowing users to respond to emails with emojis without needing to type out a full reply. - Expansion of Pulse Detection:
Google’s life-saving Loss of Pulse Detection feature is now available in more countries, including Spain, Belgium, and Italy. This feature helps detect when a person’s heart stops beating, making it a crucial tool in medical emergencies.
Pixel Buds Updates
Pixel Buds users can now interact with Gemini Live directly from their earbuds without needing to take out their phone. This feature is available across all Pixel Buds models, including the Pixel Buds Pro and A-Series.
All these features are rolling out with the October Pixel Drop, though it may take some time before they reach all devices. Stay tuned as these updates make their way to eligible Pixel phones, tablets, watches, and buds!
